4. Indian Fig Cactus

Indian Fig Cactus

Opuntia ficus-indica

This plant was a highly valuable resource for Native peoples, and continues to be hugely important in Mexico today. The Indian fig cactus can provide edible stems (nopalitos) and fruits (tunas). This cacti’s fruit ripens from August through October, and tastes like an extra-sweet watermelon. Jams, jellies, and beverages from this fruit are considered a delicacy.
