Ceramic, gift of the Dennis Gallagher Estate

Audio Transcript

Dennis Gallagher created large-scale abstract sculptures in ceramic. His work is meant to evoke ideas about fragments, memories, natural formations and/or architectural ruins. In addition, his sculptures reflect his thoughts about the precarious balances of life. This idea is reinforced by the fragility of the ceramic medium he used to create his works.

This work, which appears to be a moment frozen in time, holds your attention with its sense of instability and impending movement.

Gallagher’s rough-edged sculpture seems to draw from the concrete, gray-colored aesthetics of American highways. Yet the balanced sphere atop the vertical form has a buoyant quality, akin to a cloud in the sky.
