Dennis Gallagher (American, 1952-2009), Ball Suspended (DG0008CS), 1993, ceramic, 69 x 33 x 21 inches, Gift of the Dennis Gallagher Estate, 107-2010
Dennis Gallagher created large-scale abstract sculptures in ceramic. His work is meant to evoke ideas about fragments, memories, natural formations and architectural ruins. In addition, his sculptures reflect a precarious balance of life and material. This idea is reinforced by the fragility of the ceramic medium he used to create his works.
This work, which appears to be a moment frozen in time, holds your attention with its sense of instability and impending movement. The balanced sphere atop the vertical form has a buoyant quality, akin to a cloud in the sky.
